Sign Mom up for windrow clearing
The Town clears the snow ridge the plow leaves at the end of the driveway, all winter. Residents 65 and older, or with a disability, get first pick until October 15. Then it opens to everyone until November 7, or until 1,100 spots fill. $215 for the season, tax included.

Support groups for families
The Alzheimer Society chapter that serves Oakville runs free groups led by counsellors, including an Oakville group and one just for adult children supporting a parent.
Social and brain fitness programs
Social Café, Mind Frame and other programs for people living with dementia and the family member who comes along, at Oakville community centres like Trafalgar Park and Iroquois Ridge.
Adult day programs
Two day programs at Acclaim Health's Patty's Place for people living with dementia: a social, structured day for Mom and a few hours for the family. $24 a day, with help for the fee if needed.
A break for the family
Caregiver ReCharge gives families under a lot of strain free in-home relief of up to 24 hours, arranged through the same Central Registry.
When behaviour changes
Behavioural Supports Ontario helps when dementia brings agitation, wandering or refusing help, with education, a plan and a navigator. For Oakville it runs through the Alzheimer Society of Peel.

Look up any Ontario retirement home's licence, services and inspection history on the public register, and filter for homes that offer dementia support.

Who's eligible, what it costs and how to apply. Ontario Health atHome handles applications, you can list up to five homes, and you have 24 hours to accept a bed offer.

Publicly funded help, local non-profits and the services that make Mom's week easier.

Publicly funded help at home after an assessment, like personal support, nursing and therapy. Family can make the referral with Mom's consent.
Friendly visits and calls
Links2Care matches Mom with a trained volunteer who visits or calls once a week. A good fit when the weather keeps her in more.
Housekeeping, bathing and relief
Links2Care also offers light housekeeping, laundry, help with bathing and in-home relief for families, for people 65 and older.
Oakville Meals on Wheels
Hot weekday lunches and frozen meals delivered across Oakville. Handy for the stretch after a hospital stay or a stormy week.
Library books by mail
Oakville Public Library mails books and more to people who can't get to a branch, and lends Connection Kits to people 55 and older without internet at home.

Getting around and snow
Free rides, door-to-door transit and how Oakville handles the snow.
Free bus rides at 65
People 65 and older ride Oakville Transit free, every day, with a PRESTO card set to the 65+ fare. You set it once, in person, with ID.
care-A-van door-to-door rides
Free door-to-door rides for people who can't use regular buses because of a disability. A health practitioner signs the application.
Driveway windrow clearing
The Town clears the plow ridge at the end of the driveway after storms over 7.5 cm, from December 1 to March 31. $215 for the season.
When the plows come
Main roads first, then residential streets within about 24 hours after the snow stops. Sidewalks are plowed once 5 to 8 cm falls. The Town's page has a live plow tracker.
Visiting for the holidays?
South of Dundas, there's no street parking from 2 to 6 a.m. between November 15 and April 15. A free courtesy permit covers up to 15 days a year per car.
Winter tire discount
Every Ontario auto insurer must offer a discount for winter tires. Ask Mom's insurer how to qualify, and about mature driver discounts too.

Oakville Santa Claus Parade
9 to 11 a.m. through downtown Oakville and Kerr Village. Roads close from 6 a.m. to noon, so plan parking early.
Light Up the Night
The downtown tree lighting at 5 p.m. in Towne Square, with Santa and shops open late.
Kerr Village tree lighting and market
A holiday market and tree lighting in Westwood Park. Time to be announced.
Oakville Museum holiday programs
A Christmas Tour and Treat for adults on December 5, plus free guided tours Tuesday to Sunday, 1 to 4. The entrance and ground floor are accessible.
Oakville Galleries: Silent Songs
A free exhibition by Aideen Barry, October 24 to January 23, at Gairloch Gardens and Centennial Square. Centennial Square is fully accessible.
Family Holiday Concert
The Oakville Symphony at 1:30 and 4:30 at the Oakville Centre. Hearing-assist headsets are free, and wheelchair seating is booked by phone.
Skating, indoors and out
Public skates at Town arenas are $4.31 plus tax for people 65 and older, and a support worker helping on the ice skates free. Trafalgar Park's outdoor rink is free once it opens.
Indoor walking and winter programs
A Town membership includes drop-ins and indoor walking tracks: $59.77 for ages 50 to 79, $29.89 for 80 to 89 and free at 90. Winter programs open for registration December 1 at 7 a.m.
A garden in January
The indoor Mediterranean Garden at the RBG Centre in Burlington, about 20 minutes away, is green all winter. $16.50 for people 65 and older until December 31.
